Choosing tracks (I): Dance of Illusions

This entry is special, as it opens a new section on this blog called "Choosing tracks". In this section, I'll talk about some of the tracks that I'll include in the game's final version, mostly legendary Castlevania ones.

However, simply telling you which version will be chosen isn't funny, is it? Besides, making a choice isn't always easy. So I'll make things this way: what I consider the best versions of a same track will be posted, and we'll discuss the pros and cons of all of them. I'll never say which one win, that would ruin the surprise, as I said earlier.

Let's begin. Today, the fortunate track is "Dance of Illusions", Dracula's trademark theme. Yes, it will play the same role here. Oooooh, what a spoiler, I just revealed the final boss.

After listening intently to all the existing verions, I'll decide between these three:

1. Rondo of Blood

The use of drums and wind gives a powerful feeling to this tune. Besides, it belongs to the game where the legendary speech between Dracula and Richter occurs.

2. Symphony of the Night

This one sounds quite regal, if you ask me. I also love the sound of the organ.

3. Circle of the Moon

I have to warn you: I may be a bit biased here, since CotM was the first Castlevania I played. Goody, I enjoyed this game so much, unlocking and completing all the extra modes... Whatever. What I love about this version is that it sounds so catchy. It gives pure frenziness to the final battle.

That's it. All of them makes the final fight epic, but only one can remain. Onward to the discussion boat!

  1. Well, it depends on where you're planning to use it. The Rondo of Blood version literally screams "FINAL BOSS!" and it's quite epic, while the SotN version is much more elegant, perhaps too much... I like it, but It lacks strength :_D

The third one is pure beat, I'm not sure if it fits the slow-paced action of Castlevania games. Sounds like a classic RPG battle theme to me :$

    1. Besides liking it very much, I have a reason to pick the third one as a candidate. I don't know if you've played CotM, but in this game, Dracula is specially manipulative. He brainwashes the main character's best friend (making him fight you) and plans to use your master as a sacrifice in order to regain his full power. When the fight against him finally arrives, you're boiling with rage and wishing to crush him. This tune gets you into the battle perfectly.

I don't want to spoil the plot, but in my game, I decided to show some of Dracula's past and his actions to the CMC, so they have a real reason to fight him asides "he's the bad guy". The CotM version would then fit well in the fight, again applying what I said earlier.

  2. Circle of the Moon was not my first but my second Castlevania game. I didn't remember it sounded so bad xD. Anyways, I prefer the Rondo of Blood version.

    1. Hey, it doesn't sound bad. AoS sound quality is way worse, even having been released years later.

      Listen to this arrangement:

It's pretty good, but I'm not sure about including arrangements done outside the project.
